Supernatural VR Review: 1 Year & a Half – Still Worth the Subscription?

It’s winter in Ontario, and I’ve been using Supernatural VR for a year and a half, punching glowing orbs to the beat of great music. Is the Supernatural VR subscription still worth it? My Fitbit says I’ve burned some calories in 20 minutes. I’m dripping sweat. And honestly? I’m having the time of my life. You just need to show up, and this app will do the rest.

This is Supernatural VR and I’ve been using it for over a year now, all boxing.

But here’s the thing: I’m still paying for it. And here’s my honest, Mad-Scientist-level breakdown of whether Supernatural VR is actually worth the subscription. Spoiler: HELL YES.


WHAT IS SUPERNATURAL VR?

Supernatural VR is a VR fitness app for the Quest 2 (and Quest 3). It’s like having a personal trainer in stunning virtual environments.

What You Get

  1. Two Main Workout Types
    • Boxing – Rhythmic punching to music (my favorite!) and the one I’ve been using all year.
    • Flow – Full-body movements, squats, lateral lunges (surprisingly intense!). Not my favorite, but it works different areas of your body.
  2. Real Coaches
    • They motivate you during workouts
    • They give form cues
    • They actually make you want to push harder
    • They’re not annoying (rare for fitness coaching!)
    • I love them all. They’re very engaging in the Facebook community group. Each one has their own personality, which is great.
  3. Daily New Workouts
    • You get fresh new content every week
    • I still return to some favorites because I love the music
    • All genres: Rock, Rap, R&B, Electronics, Salsa, and more
    • Difficulty levels: Low, Medium, High, Pro
    • Different environments, sometimes it feels like the Supernatural VR multiverse

HOW IT WORKS

Put on your Quest 2 , open Supernatural, and BAM — you’re transported to your favorite location. I love the intro every time; it’s modern and clean. The people who designed this game deserve congratulations.

Glowing target orbs fly toward you to the beat of the music. You punch or hit them with your controllers (use Kiwi grips for better control — trust me). You can do right, left, abs, uppercuts, side punches, and blocks. It’s very easy to tell the difference once you’re into it. It might feel fast at first, but you adapt quickly.

Workout Structure

  • Warm-up: 2–3 minutes with a coach
  • Main Workout: 10–45 minutes (you choose)
  • Cool-down: 2–3 minutes (stretching with the coach)

Important: Secure your controller wrist straps. I’ve come dangerously close to launching a controller through my TV during an intense boxing session. Don’t be that person. Kiwi Grips were a game changer for me.

The first time I used Supernatural VR, I was in awe of the scenery. That paradise in the homepage is absolutely gorgeous. You set your height in the settings, very easy, with a coach guiding you. Then there’s a tutorial. I’m a boxing-only guy, so my first boxing session was incredibly fast. I didn’t even know what to do. But as you continue, you start recognizing what each orb type means.

I was spent. Exhausted. But I kept going , every day, for a year. I just showed up. Over time, my arms and shoulders got more toned (not bulky). You get into a boxer mindset, experimenting with techniques. As the Mad Scientist of VR fitness, I adjust hand positions, timing, and angles like Tony Stark building an arc reactor.

It’s my perfect workout buddy. I work from home, so it’s quick: I get my cardio in and move on with my day (like writing these articles for you all).

I usually do 20-minute boxing sessions, about 5 songs. The perfect length: long enough to sweat, short enough not to make excuses.


THE GOOD — WHAT I LOVE

A) Best Coaching in VR Fitness (Hands Down)

The coaches are GOOD. Motivating, insightful, and genuinely helpful.
I love them all, but Coach Doc gives the best boxing insights. He helped me tremendously.

Real form cues:

  • Punch from your core
  • Sit back in your squat
  • Rotate your hips on hooks
  • Breathe…don’t forget to breathe

I love proper form. I experiment like crazy. Every session is a little lab experiment.

B) Stunning Environments

You’re not staring at a gym wall. You’re in worlds that feel supernatural. The moon, Mars, deserts, landscapes, even the Great Wall of China. The immersion is unreal. I forget I’m in VR and feel transported.

One time, there was water around me in the environment. I stepped to get a drink, forgot it wasn’t real, stepped “into the water,” and fell. For half a second, my brain thought I was going through the floor.

My favorite is the sunset environment, the orb explosions look incredible.

C) New Workouts Daily

This is HUGE.
New music, new choreography, new coaches, new challenges.

I’ve used it for more than a year and still haven’t burned out.
Even on days when you don’t feel like it, you just show up for 30 seconds, and you’re hooked.
Scientific fact: Momentum > Motivation.

D) Actual Calorie Burn

My Fitbit doesn’t lie:

20-minute boxing session = minimum 150 calories

This isn’t fake exercise. This is REAL cardio. I sweat like crazy. My heart rate climbs. It works.

This is why I bought Kiwi Grips, sweaty hands make the controllers slippery. With the grips, I stay in control and keep a 98% speed score.

Walking is great exercise too, but you need shoes, go outside, etc. Sometimes in the morning you just want your cardio done fast. This app does that.

E) It Actually Keeps Me Consistent

I’m not a gym person. I don’t like commuting, waiting for equipment, or random small talk. I’m sociable. I promise, but routine is powerful.

Supernatural VR?
I can do it at 7:30 AM and be done by 8 AM.
No commute. No judgment. Just me, the music, and glowing targets. Exploding orbs. 

As a graphic designer, after a full day of work, I need my brain to shut off. Punching glowing spheres is therapy.

I’ve been more consistent this year than ever before.


MY VR FITNESS SETUP (WHAT I USED WITH SUPERNATURAL)

Over time I realized something important. Having the right setup made Supernatural sessions more consistent. When friction is low, I show up more often. When equipment supports intense workouts, the experience improves dramatically.

Meta Quest Headset
I use the Quest 2 and it ran Supernatural perfectly for over a year. It has been reliable and consistent. If buying new today, I would look at the Quest 3 since that is what is available. I recommend buying new with headsets so they are clean, updated, and fully supported. For Supernatural’s fast-paced boxing, a properly fitted headset is essential for tracking accuracy.

This isn’t the exact one I own, but it’s very similar. 

15 lb Kettlebell
Before Supernatural sessions, I do a quick five minute warm up with simple swings or light movements. It wakes up my shoulders and core before intense boxing movements. It is not about intensity. It is about injury prevention.

Kiwi Grips Quest2
These are my baby, I would not enoy VR Ftiness with out these, so easy to put on. and you grip is perfect. Buy these now. Thrust me.

VR Head Strap
Supernatural sessions pushed 30-45 minutes regularly. A solid strap keeps the headset stable during rapid head movements with less pressure on the face. When it feels secure, I focus on hitting targets instead of readjusting mid-workout.

Floor Fan
This might be the most underrated tool. Supernatural generates serious sweat and heat. Airflow prevents overheating during intense sessions and dramatically reduces lens fogging. Sustainability is what made me stick with Supernatural for over a year.

Will says a well-ventilated workout space is mandatory for any serious VR fitness routine. He is not wrong.


THE NOT-SO-GOOD — HONEST DRAWBACKS

Honestly, the only major drawback is the yearly subscription. You need to use it regularly to justify the cost. The music does get recycled sometimes, though new artists appear. Some Medium workouts feel like High. But with consistency, it gets easier.

If you take breaks, the difficulty catches up, fast.


    WHO IS Supernatural VR FOR

    Perfect For:

    • People who don’t love gyms (or find them inconvenient)
    • Anyone needing motivation (commitment needed!)
    • Music lovers
    • People with limited time
    • VR fitness beginners
    • Cold-climate dwellers

    Not For:

    • Hardcore athletes looking for extreme intensity
    • People who won’t use it 3+ times per month
    • Budget-conscious users
    • Anyone without VR space

    I would also say:
    People expecting to bulk up won’t find that here.
    People who only like one type of music may struggle.


    DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK FOR FITNESS?

    My honest results after a year:

    What Improved:

    • Cardio endurance
    • Shoulder/arm definition
    • Consistency
    • Stress relief
    • Better output from my design work

    Punching things = therapy.

    What Didn’t Change:

    Bulking up.
    Trying a new routine now: 3 times a week of Supernatural VR plus kettlebells.

    Supernatural is excellent cardio but not a complete fitness program.
    That’s why I combine it with my hybrid VR kettlebell routine.

    VR boxing + kettlebells = complete workout.
    Mad Scientist approved.

    Rating: 9/10

    PROS

    • Best coaching in VR fitness
    • Stunning environments
    • New workouts daily
    • Real calorie burn
    • Keeps me consistent
    • Great music selection

    CONS

    • Subscription adds up
    • Some music repetition
    • You lose access if you cancel
    • Needs dedicated space

    Bottom line:

    After a year, I’m still paying. That tells you everything.

    My Recommendation

    • Worth it if you use it 3+ times per week
    • Best VR fitness subscription
    • Try the 7-day free trial
    • Skip if you prefer one-time purchase games

    FINAL THOUGHTS

    Supernatural VR won’t replace a gym. It won’t turn you into a pro athlete.

    But it WILL:

    • Get you off the couch
    • Make you sweat
    • Keep you consistent

    And for me — a graphic designer in Ontario who loves Mad Scientist experiments — that’s worth $10/month.

    It has been an important routine for a year, and I’ve never committed to something this long before. After a year, I’m not canceling anytime soon. My membership renews this month and I’m not even thinking twice. I need it.
